  • Design Question: How can the application of user experience design processes contribute to the development of an app that encourages college students to break their academic procrastination habits?

Project Details

This project was undertaken as the final project of my Digital Design Degree in my Design Thesis course. I wanted to develop an app to solve an existing problem that I can relate to. As a result, I tackled the issue of procrastination. Using the psychology behind procrastination and its mechanisms, my goal was to develop and provide a solution for college students that will help to motivate them to break from their habits and accomplish their tasks. This was accomplished through the implementation of user experience design in the form of a mobile app that incorporates gamification principles. In doing so, students gained access to an application that can guide them towards achieving greater success in their academic careers.

Based on the research findings, I have developed a prototype for an app focused on task completion and overcoming procrastination habits in the form of a work timer. It offers a fresh approach compared to existing pomodoro timer apps by integrating a step-by-step process to not only complete tasks, but also disrupt and break procrastination patterns through repeated usage of the app. Additionally, the app incorporates gamified elements to enhance user engagement and improve retention rates. I have provided visual materials including a sitemap, wireframes, mockups, style guides and components that I developed for the app. To experience a comprehensive demonstration of the app, please access the video demo through the provided link above.
